Chetan Puttagunta

Lighter page — Chetan is the secondary POC for the raise (on hold behind Ev Randle). Depth queued only if the Ev path stalls. ^[needs-research] for the full personal/rapport layer.

Snapshot

  • Role: General Partner @ Benchmark since July 2018 (joined at age 32; announced by Bill Gurley). Investing at seed / Series A.
  • Focus: Open-source, developer tools, and enterprise/infrastructure software — the most thesis-aligned voice at Benchmark for init.inc.
  • Location: Woodside / SF Bay Area.
  • The 1-liner: The “open-source software” GP at Benchmark — first-lead investor in iconic OSS/dev companies; publicly frames a “$1T enterprise IT / IT-services TAM” and has paid up for outcome-pricing (Sierra) precedents.
  • Handle: X/Twitter @chetanp.

Background

  • Education: Stanford University, BS (2003–2007; Electrical Engineering per Wikipedia / “BS” per LinkedIn).
  • New Enterprise Associates (NEA) — joined 2011; rose to General Partner / Investment Committee. Led + sat on boards of MongoDB, MuleSoft, Elastic, Acquia, Scout, Automation Anywhere, Forter, Sentry, Reltio, Nuvolo, Logikcull, Heap, SiteTracker.
  • BenchmarkGP since Jul 2018.
  • Notable exits / outcomes: MongoDB (NASDAQ: MDB), MuleSoft (acq. Salesforce 1B), Scout (acq. Workday 440M), Manus (acq. Meta).

Investing

  • Thesis: Open-source and developer-led enterprise software; “the one question to ask when analyzing market size”; skeptical of over-rotating on metrics. Publicly cites a ~$1T enterprise IT + IT-services TAM and points to Sierra (his portfolio) as the model for outcome/usage pricing over per-seat.
  • Current Benchmark roster: LangChain, Legora, Airbyte, Cursor, Reducto, Levelpath, Numeral, Duffel, Fomo, Modern Treasury, Summation, MindsDB, Bezi; Chairman/board of Elastic. (LangChain $10M seed, Apr 2023, was Benchmark-led on the OSS-first-lead pattern — partner inferred Chetan, not named in the announcement.)
  • Style: Concentrated, conviction-led; comfortable as a long-term board chair (Elastic). Seed/Series-A lead.

Public voice

  • 20VC (Harry Stebbings): “The One Question To Ask When Analysing Market Size, How To Compete in Today’s War for Talent & Why We Have Seen An Over-Rotation In Running Businesses Based on Metrics.”
  • Bill Gurley’s “Above the Crowd” announcement of his Benchmark hire (2018) — useful context on how Benchmark frames partners.
  • X/Twitter @chetanp (active).

Personal & interests (rapport)

^[needs-research] — deferred (secondary POC). Known anchors: Stanford alum; long-arc open-source conviction; values first-principles market-size thinking over metric-chasing. Deep personal/hobbies/causes pull queued only if Chetan becomes the live path.

Fundraise Relationship (init.inc)

  • Status: Secondary / on hold behind Ev Randle“Going with Ev Randle; Chetan on hold, trigger only if Ev path stalls.” His “$1T enterprise IT” TAM + Sierra outcome-pricing precedent are the thesis pattern-match (see Investing).
  • Conversation log (newest first):
    • 2026-05-25 — Status set to Secondary / on hold behind Ev Randle. No direct touchpoint yet.
    • 2026-05-12 20:00 (iMessage to Philip Bogdanov @ OpenAI/Align Fund): Sazzad explicitly requested Philip backchannel to Chetan: “Would love to get your help in backchanneling for these, or if there is anyone else on your mind. Especially Chetan Puttagunta at Benchmark would be a very helpful intro.
    • 2026-05-12 22:13 (Philip’s reply): “Awesome, I’ll casually backchannel with the folks I know when I see them. Let me text Felicis, FF now. I can text Benchmark too, but transparently it may be too early for them.”
    • 2026-05-12 22:28 (Philip clarification):“Benchmark’s perfect stage is Series A” — NOT seed. Sazzad pivoted to “meet Ev casually now, keep the conversation calm” and warm Benchmark up for future Series A timing.
  • Mutual connections / warm path: Isaiah (intended connector if/when triggered). Philip Bogdanov = potential backchanneler (Align Fund / OpenAI ex-colleague network). → Benchmark.
  • Live stage: Secondary — tracked in the CRM (Google Sheet). Per Philip’s read, Benchmark is structurally a Series A firm for init.inc, not seed.

Cross-check vs existing wiki

  • Strong agreement with the existing Benchmark page and cap-table-patterns-across-startup-competitors, which both name Chetan the primary / Wave-1 target on thesis grounds ($1T TAM, Sierra precedent, MongoDB/Elastic/Modern Treasury legacy). All confirmed here.
  • ⚠️ Sequencing divergence: those pages rank Chetan first; live outreach (2026-05-25) leads with Ev Randle (warm intro landed, met 5/15). Chetan is now the fallback — a pipeline-sequencing call, not a downgrade of thesis fit. The cap-table-patterns line listing “Chetan = Wave 1” is stale relative to current sequencing (left unedited — out of scope).
